Fire at Glasgow Central Station Causes Major Service Disruption Today

Sunday at 10: 45 a. m. ET, an alarm for a fire in a shop on Union Street triggered a major emergency response that has closed glasgow Central Station until further notice. The timing is significant because crews were alerted mid-afternoon and the blaze spread into adjoining Victorian buildings, forcing an immediate station shutdown.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Response

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service deployed a substantial response, keeping 15 appliances on scene including a high-reach vehicle, a water rescue team and specialist resources to tackle the blaze; they urged the public to avoid the area and advised local residents to keep windows closed, and they say there have been no reported casualties.

Glasgow Central Station Closure and Transport Impact

ScotRail has confirmed Central Station is closed until at least Monday morning ET and that no services will call at the station, meaning services between Ayrshire and glasgow are expected to be impacted for several days; it is not yet known where trains running into the city will terminate while the closure remains in place, and the operator said it would provide updates as soon as possible.

Fire Origin, Building Damage and On-Scene Observations

The alarm was raised after a fire was reported in a shop on Union Street at 10: 45 a. m. ET (15: 45 local), and firefighters were on scene shortly after being alerted to a blaze in the ground floor of a four-storey commercial building at 10: 46 a. m. ET; observers described flames licking the roof around the dome, the dome at one corner of the building has collapsed, pockets of fire remain and crews on height appliances are spraying water above the roof and dampening down visible flames.

Nearby hotels and residents were evacuated as the fire took hold, and witnesses reported parts of adjacent buildings collapsing as the blaze spread. Water was being pumped from the River Clyde to douse the flames while multiple emergency vehicles and personnel worked to contain the incident.

ScotRail’s confirmation that Central will remain closed until at least Monday morning ET is the next confirmed milestone; more details are expected from emergency services and the rail operator once on-scene operations allow for a safety assessment and clearer timetable information.
