Merriam residents Yadira Garcia and husband describe home and truck damage

In Merriam, Yadira Garcia and her husband said they took cover as the EF-0 tornado moved through Friday night. Garcia said the storm gave little warning before it struck and that they sheltered in place as conditions intensified.

“The windows sounded like they were about to burst or explode, ” Garcia said.

A large tree was uprooted and fell onto the couple’s home, crushing part of the structure and a red truck in the driveway. Garcia said the tree caused significant damage to the roof and that water was getting through the damaged area. “That front part right there waters going through it … it’s going to definitely need to be replaced, ” she said.

A neighbor who also took cover said the damage to the truck was substantial. “It’s a terrible shame, it was a really nice truck, ” the neighbor said. The neighbor added that, as the storm approached, “I looked out the window, and it was straight-line winds coming down the street. ”

Storm damage also reported near St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School in Kansas City

Damage from the storm was reported across the metro area. Near St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School, close to 40th and Main streets in Kansas City, Missouri, a fence was knocked down and a tree was uprooted and fell away from the property.

Even with the property damage, Garcia said she and her husband were grateful to be safe and focused on moving forward. “We will just trust the process and hope things get better, ” she said.

The National Weather Service said its findings were preliminary and subject to change pending final review and publication in NWS Storm Data. A next update is expected with that final review and publication, though the timing was not specified as of 12: 15 p. m. ET Saturday.
