Toronto Power Restored Following Overnight Outages Impacting Thousands

Thousands of residents in Toronto faced power outages overnight due to disruptions in the city’s eastern and northern regions. However, by 8 a.m. on Sunday, most households had their electrical service restored.

Details of the Power Outage

On Saturday evening, around 8 p.m., approximately 13,000 customers experienced a significant power outage specifically in the Eastern Beach area. Toronto Hydro reported that multiple neighborhoods, including those around Danforth Ave., Queen St., Victoria Park Ave., and Greenwood Ave., were affected.

Social media footage captured the scene of a darkened Queen Street East where vehicles moved slowly along the desolate street, typically filled with lights. Toronto Hydro attributed the outages to a “loss of supply” from Hydro One and actively worked to restore service.

Restoration Timeline

  • Power restoration began shortly after midnight.
  • By 12:54 a.m., the company announced that power had been fully restored.
  • However, at around 4:10 a.m., another outage affected parts of Ward 6 (York Centre) and Ward 7 (Humber River-Black Creek), impacting about 2,870 customers.

Despite the second outage, Toronto Hydro reported that the issue was resolved, as indicated by their updated outage map.

Response from Utility Companies

Both Toronto Hydro and Hydro One were contacted for comments on the reasons behind these outages. Therefore, residents can expect a follow-up regarding the causes of the disruptions.

As Toronto continues to experience power fluctuations, efficient communication from utility providers is essential for maintaining public trust.
