Michaela Strachan Says She Skips Check-Ups After Double Mastectomy

Strachan revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago and underwent a double mastectomy with reconstruction; she told interviewers that because “they took it all out” she no longer has follow-up check-ups. She said she sometimes forgets she had cancer and prefers to describe herself as someone who has thrived since the operation rather than a “cancer survivor, ” adding that her case was caught extremely early thanks to a routine mammogram.

Timmy Mallett, Early Labels and a 50-Show, Four-Decade Career

Strachan first rose to prominence on The Wide Awake Club with Timmy Mallett in 1986 after leaving theatre school; over more than 40 years she has fronted upward of 50 shows across television, including clubbing series The Hit Man and Her with Pete Waterman and wildlife programming for OWL TV. Michaela Strachan Still Holding Out for Strictly After Dancing on Ice Final

Despite a recent run on Dancing on Ice, where she reached the final, Strachan says she has long wanted to do Strictly but has never secured a place — she once reached a long-list stage and had a phone conversation with a producer but did not receive a callback. She also turned down an invitation to join The Real Full Monty: Ladies Night, saying, “There is no way I’m showing my boobs to off to anybody. I’m not brave enough. ” Strachan added she is still rehabbing a torn hamstring from the ice-rink and that if asked next year, when recovery is stronger, she would probably consider a ballroom show invitation.

She has also spoken about early-career harassment, recalling multiple instances of being groped or flashed while working in the industry and in day jobs before television. Those episodes, she said, stayed with her even as she went on to earn an honorary doctorate in science from Wolverhampton University and build a long-running broadcasting career.

Her theatre tour to celebrate her 60th birthday is expected next month; specific dates and times for the tour have not been released and are expected to be announced ahead of performances.
