David Farley Wins One Nation Preselection in Albury
David Farley, 69, a Narrandera-based irrigator, won a three-way One Nation preselection held in Albury, defeating Leigh Wolki, 58, a small business owner from Albury, and Guy Cooper, 31, who comes from a fifth-generation Farrer farming family. The contest was held on Saturday and concluded with Farley securing the party’s endorsement for the federal byelection.
Pauline Hanson Confirms Endorsement
Pauline Hanson attended the Albury preselection and said that she was confident the party had selected the right candidate. Hanson said, “This is a resilient community of proud Australians. They deserve a representative who shares the same values, who works hard, and who puts their community first. David Farley is that representative. ” Barnaby Joyce, who defected to the rightwing party in December, was also present for the announcement.
Farrer Byelection on 9 May and the Focal Point 10
Farley will contest the New South Wales seat held previously by Sussan Ley, who quit parliament last month after being deposed as opposition leader by Angus Taylor. Recent polling shows the party’s popularity is surging, and the 126, 000 sq km rural electorate will test One Nation’s organisational skills on the ground during the campaign. Farley said that One Nation represented “the only real alternative for Australians who are watching their living standards go backward under Labor. “
In an address to the NSW Liberal party state council on Saturday morning, the newly minted leader of the opposition, Angus Taylor, said the byelection would be “a tough fight” and pledged to contest Farrer vigorously, adding, “With your help, we’re going to be putting up a hell of a fight in Farrer, all the way through to the close of the polls. “
The Liberal and National parties have not yet announced their candidates for Farrer. The Climate 200-backed independent candidate, Michelle Millthorpe, who challenged Ley at the last election, will run again. Labor is unlikely to field a candidate in the contest.
Nominations for the seat close on 13 April at 11: 59 p. m. ET; the byelection is set for 9 May, when voters across Farrer will decide whether One Nation can make inroads into the long-held seat.
