Ford Recalls 1.74 Million Vehicles Over Rearview Camera Issues

Ford has announced two significant recalls impacting approximately 1.74 million vehicles in the United States due to rearview camera issues. The recalls involve specific models with problems that can hinder the driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle when reversing.

Details of the Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) disclosed that an internal component in the infotainment system of some 2021-2026 Ford Broncos and 2021-2024 Ford Edges may overheat. This overheating can cause the rearview image to fail during reversing maneuvers. Additionally, certain models, including 2020-2022 Ford Escapes, Lincoln Corsairs, and 2020-2024 Lincoln Aviators and Explorers, may display a flipped or inverted rearview image.

Affected Vehicles

  • Ford Broncos and Edges: 849,310 vehicles
  • Ford Escapes, Lincoln Corsairs, Aviators, and Explorers: 889,950 vehicles

Ford anticipates that all these vehicles have the identified defects. Fortunately, the company reports no known injuries or accidents linked to these issues. Nevertheless, the NHTSA has cautioned that these malfunctions could increase the risk of crashes.

Proposed Solutions

For owners of the affected Ford Broncos and Edges, a free software update will be provided to enhance the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM). Notifications to owners will be sent out by the end of this month, with updates available through dealerships or via an over-the-air update.

Regarding the Ford Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators, and Explorers, a remedy is still in development. Meanwhile, interim notification letters are expected to be dispatched in the coming months to inform owners of the safety risks involved.
