Britney Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Wednesday night in Southern California, marking the most serious legal incident in the pop superstar's life since her highly publicized conservatorship battle. The Britney Spears arrest has sent shockwaves across the entertainment world and reignited urgent concern about her well-being.

Why Was Britney Spears Arrested — The DUI Incident Explained

A California Highway Patrol spokesperson confirmed that a black BMW 430i was reported driving erratically at high speed on the southbound 101 Freeway around 8:48 p.m. ET Wednesday night. Spears was pulled over near Westlake Boulevard in Ventura County, showed signs of impairment, and was given field sobriety tests before being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol.

The pop superstar was handcuffed by CHP around 9:30 p.m. ET and booked by the sheriff's department around 3:00 a.m. ET. She was released from jail around 6:00 a.m. ET. Britney Spears was alone in the vehicle when pulled over in Westlake Village, not far from her Thousand Oaks home.

She was immediately taken to a hospital after being pulled over so that CHP officers could draw her blood to determine her blood alcohol content. She did not sustain any injuries, and the hospital visit was purely to determine intoxication levels.

Britney Spears DUI: Her Team Issues Statement, Court Date Set

A representative for Spears confirmed she is scheduled to appear in court on May 4. The rep released a statement calling the incident "completely inexcusable" and said Britney would take the right steps to comply with the law, calling it the "first step in long overdue change."

The statement also noted that her sons would be spending time with her and that her loved ones were working on a plan to set her up for success and well-being going forward. Her vehicle was towed from the scene following the Britney Spears arrest.

What Britney Spears Texted a Close Friend Right After the Arrest

Britney Spears' longtime friend and former assistant Sean Phillip revealed during a March 6 appearance on Good Morning Britain what she texted him shortly after the arrest. "She said, 'I'm OK,'" he shared. He added that this incident is not a "slippery slope" to worse behavior, saying, "It's not her character. She's not a harmful person."

Sam Asghari and Jason Alexander React to Britney Spears Arrest

Britney's ex-husband Sam Asghari urged the public not to spread rumors during his March 6 appearance on NewsNation. "Everybody makes mistakes and everybody deserves privacy," Asghari said. "If we learn from history, we have to understand the press could hurt somebody recovering from a situation like this."

Her other ex-husband Jason Alexander wrote on Instagram, "Rumors spread faster than facts, and suddenly someone is being judged before the truth is even clear." He called for facts, fairness, and due process for Spears.

Britney Spears' History and Life Since the Conservatorship

This is the first time Spears, 44, has been arrested. She was charged with a misdemeanor hit-and-run in 2007, which was later dismissed after she paid for damages. Her father was subsequently granted conservatorship over her assets, which lasted 13 years and prompted the global "Free Britney" movement before being terminated in 2021.

Spears has not released an album since 2016's "Glory" and last performed live in the U.S. in 2018. She had been scheduled to launch a Las Vegas residency in 2019 but postponed it and stepped away from performing indefinitely.

The Britney Spears DUI arrest comes months after her ex-husband Kevin Federline released a tell-all book about their relationship titled "You Thought You Knew," and sources told outlets she had been in a "very dark" place following its debut.
