Ortuño Enhances Seismic Survey Safety and Requirements

In a recent press conference, Uruguay’s Environment Minister, Edgardo Ortuño, confirmed the commencement of seismic survey activities off the Uruguayan coast. He emphasized that these operations started with the necessary permits and denied any claims regarding unauthorized work.

Policy and Oversight of Seismic Surveys

Minister Ortuño clarified that the decision for oil exploration is beyond the jurisdiction of his department. He stated, “The determination for petroleum prospecting in Uruguay falls under government policy led by the Ministry of Industry and Ancap.” This decision-making policy was established during the previous administration.

Previous Seismic Studies

Ortuño noted that seismic surveys have been conducted in broader areas previously. He stated, “Previous assessments were undertaken on a much larger scale than what we see today.”

Enhanced Environmental Protection Measures

To improve safety during these seismic surveys, the Environment Ministry has strengthened environmental requirements. Minister Ortuño announced, “We have increased protective measures and environmental demands.”

  • Distance protections for marine fauna have been doubled.
  • Technical reports were commissioned from both internal experts and external advisors.

Professional Monitoring in Place

The ongoing seismic operations involve professional oversight aboard the vessels. The Minister assured, “We can confirm these activities are being conducted with observers.”

These experts began their roles after receiving specific training on the operations starting Friday.
