Pixel Launcher Search Bar Drops M3 Expressive Feature
The recent update to the Pixel Launcher, as part of the Android 16 QPR3 March update, has led to significant changes in the search bar feature. The overhaul removes the modern M3 Expressive search bar design that was introduced last year, returning to an older style.
Changes to the Pixel Launcher Search Bar
In December, Google announced a shift from the Pixel Launcher search to the Google app. Now, with the Android 16 QPR3 update, users will notice the absence of the previously updated Material 3 Expressive search bar on their home screens.
Details of the M3 Expressive Search Bar
Previously, the M3 Expressive search bar featured a design that included:
- A ‘G’ logo
- Microphone icon
- Lens icon
- AI Mode shortcut in a circular format
These elements were neatly placed within a lighter pill-shaped container. This thoughtful layout provided a more organized visual experience on the home screen.
Reversion to the Old Design
The current update reverts to the old design, which consolidates icons into a single container. The AI Mode now appears adjacent to the microphone, resulting in a somewhat cluttered appearance on the home screen. This change diminishes the user-friendly separation that was a highlight of the previous design.
Functional Features of the Updated Search Bar
Despite its aesthetic drawbacks, the updated search bar includes functional features. Users can long-press the search bar to customize the AI Mode shortcut. Options available for customization now include:
- Live
- Translate (text)
- Song Search
- Weather
- Translate (camera)
- Sports
- Dictionary
- Homework
- Finance
- Saved
- News
Users also have the flexibility to disable the AI Mode shortcut entirely if desired. This functionality aligns the Pixel Launcher search bar more closely with the Google app’s search widget.
Indications of a Permanent Change
Interestingly, this design regression was first introduced with Android 17 Beta 1 but was rolled back in Beta 2. However, its presence in the Android 16 QPR3 update suggests that this change may be permanent. It appears that the search functionality at the bottom of the Pixel Launcher is increasingly integrated with the Google app, similar to the experience on other Android devices.
As users adapt to these updates, it remains critical for Google to balance functionality and aesthetics in future designs to meet user expectations effectively.
