Air Canada Rouge has launched its inaugural Boeing 737 MAX 8, marking a significant upgrade in its cabin experience. This move is part of the airline’s broader strategy to draw more leisure travelers to its services.

Introduction of the Boeing 737 MAX 8

The first Boeing 737 MAX 8 flight took off on March 5 from Vancouver, with routes to Edmonton International Airport and Kelowna. This aircraft is the first of 45 planned for deployment within Rouge by year-end.

Investment in Cabin Enhancements

In a bid to improve customer experience, Rouge’s cabin renewal program emphasizes comfort, connectivity, and consistency. Notable enhancements include:

  • Free onboard WiFi, sponsored by Bell.
  • Personal seatback entertainment systems.
  • Reclining seats across all classes.

Mark Nasr, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer at Air Canada, expressed the goal of ensuring that all passengers feel a sense of comfort and care when flying Rouge. The improvements aim to create a modernized travel experience with cutting-edge amenities.

New Vancouver Crew Base

As part of its expansion, Air Canada Rouge will establish a dedicated crew base in Vancouver. This will enable additional routes servicing leisure destinations:

  • Cancun
  • Edmonton
  • Kelowna
  • Las Vegas
  • Los Angeles
  • Mexico City
  • Miami
  • Puerto Vallarta
  • San Jose del Cabo

Service from Calgary International Airport will also include nonstop flights to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, enhancing travel options for Canadians.

Aircraft Configuration

The 737 MAX 8 will feature a total of 177 seats, distributed as follows:

Cabin Number of Seats
Business Class 12
Preferred 18
Economy 147

Continued Fleet Enhancements

Air Canada is investing heavily in its fleet, modernizing several aircraft types. This includes:

  • Eight Airbus A350-1000s to bolster long-haul services.
  • Fourteen Boeing 787-10s scheduled for delivery this year.
  • Twenty-three Airbus A220-300s with options for ten additional units.

In the transition, Rouge will phase out its Airbus A319-100 and shift to the state-of-the-art Boeing 737 MAX 8. This strategic pivot signals a new era for Air Canada Rouge as it enhances its service offerings in leisure travel across North America and the Caribbean.
