Hegseth Confirms No U.S. Expansion of Military Goals in Iran

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that the United States is not expanding its military goals in Iran, amid rising tensions. His remarks came after President Donald Trump suggested U.S. involvement in choosing Iran’s next leader.

Current Military Operations in Iran

The Pentagon has outlined its current military campaign, known as Operation Epic Fury. This operation primarily targets Iran’s offensive missile capabilities, missile production sites, and naval assets, all while preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

During a recent telephone interview, Trump emphasized the necessity for the U.S. to assist in selecting Iran’s future leadership. Hegseth reinforced this stance, describing the military’s objectives as clearly defined, with no expansion planned.

Iran’s Regional Retaliation

As part of their military efforts, the U.S. and Israeli forces have struck numerous targets across Iran. This response has led to Iranian retaliatory actions against several countries, including Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. For instance, following missile strikes, fire crews in Bahrain had to extinguish a blaze at a refinery.

In a recent escalation, Azerbaijan accused Iran of launching drones into its territory, leading to the closure of its airspace for 12 hours. Hegseth noted that Iran’s attacks on regional nations are inadvertently strengthening U.S. alliances. He asserted that such actions are uniting those countries against Iran.

Destruction of Iranian Naval Assets

U.S. military operations have so far destroyed 30 Iranian warships, including a significant drone carrier. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command, stated that these actions are essential to cripple Iran’s ability to rebuild its military capabilities.

Cooper indicated that as operations transition to the next phase, the focus will remain on dismantling Iran’s missile production infrastructure:

  • Over 2,000 targets have been hit in Iran.
  • The U.S. will systematically tackle Iranian missile production.

Ongoing Military Engagement

Despite mounting tensions, senior officials, including Trump, have warned that ongoing conflicts may lead to increased U.S. military casualties. Hegseth remarked that Iran is miscalculating its stance, believing the U.S. cannot sustain its military efforts.

“Iran’s assumption that we cannot continue this fight is flawed,” Hegseth stated. “We determine the timeline for these operations.”

As the situation continues to evolve, both the U.S. Military and government officials remain focused on their defined objectives and the broader implications of regional dynamics.
