Mother and daughter killed as Oklahoma Tornado strikes vehicle near Fairview
An oklahoma tornado struck northwest Oklahoma Thursday night ET, killing a mother and her daughter after their vehicle was struck while driving on State Highway 60 near Fairview. The deaths occurred as a line of severe storms produced a large funnel cloud, widespread wind damage and warnings that dangerous weather will continue into the weekend.
Oklahoma Tornado Hits Vehicle
Major County investigators believe the vehicle was struck directly by a tornado while the pair were inside on Highway 60. Officials say the crash scene was located after a cellular phone signal was traced, and emergency crews confirmed the two were found deceased at the site west of Fairview.
Search and emergency response
Multiple local and state agencies responded to the storm-impacted area as crews searched for the missing vehicle. The state patrol assisted in tracing the phone signal that led authorities to the scene. Law enforcement described the incident as difficult for first responders, who said the storms moved in rapidly and complicated communications and outreach efforts.
Widespread damage reported in Major County
Beyond the fatal crash, officials reported additional storm-related damage across the county. A semi-truck rolled over on Highway 412; no injuries were reported from that incident. Utility crews estimated about 3 miles of downed power lines, and there was structural damage reported in Cleo Springs with possible further damage farther north. At the time of initial assessments, no other injuries had been confirmed.
