Bottas Gains Advantage in Melbourne After Penalty Is Revoked
Valtteri Bottas has received a significant boost in his return to Formula 1 as he will not face a grid penalty at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. This news comes as the Finnish driver re-enters the competition with Cadillac for the 2026 season opener.
Bottas Avoids Grid Penalty
Initially, Bottas was expected to incur a five-place grid penalty. This penalty originated from an incident during the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where he collided with Haas driver Kevin Magnussen. After locking up, Bottas spun Magnussen, leading to a 10-second time penalty. However, he retired from the race before serving this penalty, which was then converted to a five-place grid drop for his next race.
Regulation Change Benefits Bottas
Due to a recent revision in the Formula 1 sporting regulations, unserved penalties that are over 12 months old now expire. Bottas’ penalty was issued in December 2024, meaning it is no longer applicable for the upcoming race. This change was specified in Article B2.5.4 of the regulations, which states that any grid penalties of 15 places or fewer must be served within 12 months.
Returning Strong
Bottas confirmed the news of his penalty’s revocation while at the Albert Park paddock. He humorously noted the update on social media, saying, “You don’t follow me on Instagram? I just did an announcement 20 minutes ago. Apparently, it’s vanished thanks to some new regulation.”
