Storm Confirm 2026 NSW Cup Expansion Entry
The Melbourne Storm is making history by fielding a stand-alone team in the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup for the first time. This marks a significant development in Rugby League pathways within Victoria. The announcement follows a remarkable achievement in the 2025 Jersey Flegg Cup, where Melbourne won the premiership, defeating the Penrith Panthers with a score of 38-16. This victory showcased the depth of talent within the Storm and paved the way for their elevation into the NSW Cup.
Key Players and Performers
Several players from the championship-winning Jersey Flegg squad will join the inaugural NSW Cup team. Notably, halfback Dylan Brettle demonstrated exceptional skill, receiving Player-of-the-Match honors in the Grand Final during his debut season.
Originally from the Rouse Hill Rhinos, Brettle moved to Melbourne in late 2024. He expressed excitement about continuing his career with the Storm, stating, “It is just great for the pathways down in Melbourne. It’s a very exciting time for myself going into my second year with the club.”
Brettle’s Journey
Brettle’s success stems from a strong junior career. In 2024, he was recognized as Player of the Year at the Parramatta Junior Rugby League Awards. Despite facing challenges, including a recent jaw surgery that prevented him from participating in the final month of pre-season, Brettle is committed to earning his place on the Storm’s NSW Cup team.
- Position: Halfback
- Jersey Flegg Experience: Player-of-the-Match in Grand Final
- Challenges: Jaw surgery sidelined him for early season
“With the introduction of the NSW Cup this year, I will be hoping to get quite a few games and really push for a spot in that team,” Brettle added.
Enhancing Development Pathways
The inclusion in the NSW Cup strengthens the Storm’s development framework. It enables a seamless transition from junior football to the NRL, allowing players to compete under the Storm’s banner. “It has been the talk of the town for a little bit now for all of us younger boys that now have got an opportunity to go and play NSW Cup,” Brettle said.
Investment in Women’s Rugby
Additionally, the Storm is expanding its developmental pathways by introducing its first official female teams. These teams will participate in the Westpac Lisa Fiaola Cup (Under 17s Girls) and the Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 19s Women). This initiative demonstrates the club’s commitment to enhancing women’s rugby in Victoria.
Inaugural NSW Cup Match
The Melbourne Storm’s first Knock-On Effect NSW Cup match will take place tonight at AAMI Park, where they will host the Parramatta Eels. This event serves as a historic curtain-raiser before the club’s NRL season opener. Fans can catch the action live on BarTV Sports.
