Mohamad Confirms Control Over Gulf States’ Situation

The situation in the Gulf States remains stable, according to Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan. He stated that despite the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, the Malaysian government does not foresee the necessity for an evacuation plan for its citizens in the affected areas.

Malaysia’s Proactive Measures in the Gulf States

During a recent session in Dewan Negara, Mohamad addressed concerns regarding Malaysians stranded due to regional unrest. His response came following queries from Senator Azahar Hassan about the government’s actions to assist affected nationals in Qatar and other Middle Eastern countries.

Current Status of Malaysians in the Gulf

  • Approximately 29,000 Malaysians reside in Gulf States.
  • About 13,000 of these individuals are registered with Malaysian embassies.
  • In Qatar, 2,007 Malaysians are primarily employed in the airline sector.

Mohamad emphasized that the government has implemented various measures to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens. This includes establishing a 24-hour operations room and ensuring that individuals can easily contact consular services in their respective locations.

Support for Stranded Malaysians

The Malaysian Foreign Ministry’s immediate priority is to assist those in transit in cities such as Dubai, Oman, Abu Dhabi, and Doha. Many of these individuals have adequate accommodation and facilities, alleviating immediate concerns.

Mohamad mentioned ongoing discussions with Lembaga Tabung Haji to use their housing in Jeddah to support any affected Malaysians. The government also plans to provide shelter at embassy premises for stranded students and other individuals facing difficulties.

Air Travel and Flight Cancellations

Despite the tense environment, Malaysia Airlines has temporarily suspended flights to Saudi Arabia. Mohamad noted that the closure of air routes is tied to increased insurance premiums affecting flight operations. The government is working to address this challenge.

Mohamad expressed confidence in the capacity of umrah operators to manage their pilgrims efficiently under the current circumstances. The situation will continue to be monitored closely, ensuring the safety and well-being of Malaysians in the Gulf States.
