Modesto Gas Prices Surge as Stations Shift to New Fuel Blends

The cost of gasoline is set to rise for drivers in Stanislaus County as the region transitions to summer-blend gasoline. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), California leads the nation in this annual switch, which typically impacts fuel prices significantly. The transition to summer-blend gasoline not only occurs earlier in California but also results in higher production costs.

Rising Gas Prices in Modesto

The switch to summer-blend fuel typically begins at the end of winter, causing gas prices to creep up. The AAA reported that production of summer-blend gasoline incurs higher expenses. Currently, prices in Modesto are around $4.49 per gallon, which is lower than the statewide average of $4.63.

The seasonal transition mandates that most states switch to summer-blend fuel by May 1, with nationwide sales commencing by June 1. Many California drivers already experience rising costs as refineries shift production to meet these requirements.

Factors Influencing Gas Prices

  • Production costs for summer-blend fuel are higher.
  • Refinery maintenance during this season constrains supply, pushing prices higher.
  • Global issues, such as tensions in oil-producing regions, can create additional volatility.
  • Current crude oil prices range between $50 and $70 per barrel, affecting consumer prices.

AAA noted that approximately half of the pump price consists of crude oil costs, while the other half accounts for refining, distribution, marketing, and taxes. Despite seasonal spikes, projections suggest that gas prices in California may stabilize around 6% lower in 2026 compared to 2025.

Current Gas Prices in Stanislaus County

Stanislaus County ranks among the eight least expensive counties in California for gasoline. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is currently $4.49. A year ago, drivers were paying about $4.78 per gallon in the Modesto area.
