CBS Criticizes Frigid Conditions, Drafty Windows at St. Clare’s Hospital

A Conception Bay South resident, Carl Lundrigan, is advocating for better conditions at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s. Lundrigan’s call for action follows his unfortunate experience during a hospitalization for pneumonia that began on February 16.

Reports of Frigid Conditions

During his week-long stay, Lundrigan faced severe discomfort due to frigid temperatures and drafty windows. He expressed concern that the conditions he experienced could worsen patients’ health rather than aid their recovery. “I was more worried about being sicker when I got out than when I went in,” he stated in an interview.

Unpleasant Hospital Environment

  • Another patient was forced to wear a winter coat while seated in a chair.
  • Lundrigan needed multiple blankets and even received a quilt from another patient for warmth.
  • He noticed that temperatures in his room dropped further as the week progressed.

On the final night of his stay, Lundrigan was transferred to a warmer area of the hospital. However, his dissatisfaction with the facility’s condition persisted.

Government Accountability

Lundrigan took to social media to share his experience, directly addressing Premier Tony Wakeham. He observed that, shortly after his post, hospital maintenance staff arrived to cover his window with plastic. However, this only caused more problems, as the sheet trapped air and worsened the chill.

Encouraging elected officials to visit hospitals, Lundrigan emphasized the need for significant, long-term improvements in healthcare facilities. “We need something that’s going to be decent where people can actually go that are sick and get better,” he asserted.

Response from Health Officials

Health Minister Lela Evans acknowledged Lundrigan’s concerns, stating that the hospital’s conditions were “sad and embarrassing” and offered apologies to patients. She attributed the issue to a “consistent lack of maintenance” inherited from the previous Liberal government, which held office from late 2015 until fall 2025.
