Lebanon Hit by Israeli Strikes: 10 Dead, Say Officials
Israeli airstrikes overnight have resulted in the deaths of at least ten individuals in Lebanon, according to the country’s public health ministry. The strikes, which occurred in the Baalbek region of the Bekaa Valley, targeted Hezbollah command centers, escalating tensions in an already volatile situation.
Casualties and Damage from Israeli Strikes
Hezbollah confirmed that eight of its members were among the deceased. Alongside the fatalities, at least 24 people sustained injuries, including three children. Health authorities did not release the names of the victims.
Political Context and Ceasefire Concerns
This recent military action poses a threat to the fragile ceasefire mediated by the United States, established in late 2024. Israeli forces have reportedly engaged in near-daily strikes against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. The ongoing conflict’s dynamics may shift dramatically as President Trump considers military responses to Iran’s nuclear activities, increasing the potential for retaliatory violence from Iran-aligned groups like Hezbollah.
Reactions from Hezbollah and Lebanese Officials
On Saturday, Hezbollah’s senior official, Mahmoud Qomati, labeled the strikes a new act of aggression, asserting that the group has no choice but to resist. The mourners held funerals for their fallen comrades, including Hussein Mohamed Yaghi, a notable commander related to a significant Hezbollah figure who passed away in 2023.
Prior Targeting of Hezbollah Figures
Israel has previously targeted high-ranking Hezbollah members. Notably, in November, it assassinated Haytham Ali Tabatabai, identified by Israel as the group’s military chief of staff.
Additional Strikes and International Implications
The strikes in eastern Lebanon followed earlier Israeli airstrikes on the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon. Aimed at a site allegedly serving as a Hamas command center, this attack resulted in at least one death and multiple injuries. Hamas condemned the actions, asserting that the targeted facility was crucial for maintaining security within the camp.
