Smiling Friends Is Over: Adult Swim's Beloved Animated Series Ends After Season 3 — By Choice
Smiling Friends Is Over

Smiling Friends is ending. On February 26, 2026, creators Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack posted an audio announcement to Adult Swim's official social media channels confirming that the animated comedy will conclude after its third season. There will be no Smiling Friends Season 4, no Season 5 — and the fandom is in full mourning mode.

Smiling Friends Cancelled? Not Exactly — This Was the Creators' Call

Adult Swim had already renewed the series for Seasons 4 and 5 before Season 3 premiered. That makes this announcement even more stunning. Hadel opened the video with zero ambiguity: "This is not a bit. This is not a joke. Michael and I are here to announce that Smiling Friends will be ending after Season 3 is done."

Cusack was equally direct, clarifying that Adult Swim did not cancel the show. Cusack explained that ending Smiling Friends "was our decision" and that Adult Swim had been "very supportive," telling the pair: "If you're not feeling like making a cartoon, we're not going to stop you."

This is a rare moment in the adult animation world — a critically acclaimed, top-performing show walked away voluntarily while networks and agents were still pushing for more.

Why Is Smiling Friends Over? Burnout, Not Failure

Cusack said that after finishing Season 3, both he and Hadel "had the same feeling where we felt pretty burnt out after putting years and years into this, but also pretty accomplished." That combination of exhaustion and creative satisfaction drove their decision to walk away.

A recurring theme in the announcement was the creators' refusal to produce what Hadel categorized as "slop" — content created out of obligation. "We wouldn't want to be doing more seasons half-hearted," Hadel remarked. "It's not fair to the audience."

Cusack drew a pointed comparison to the greatest band of all time. "The Beatles are so cool. They ended with Abbey Road on a peak, and it's like this nice little discography you can go back to watch. Leaving the audience wanting more is the best." It is hard to argue with that logic, even if it stings.

Smiling Friends Season 3 Final Episodes: April 12 on Adult Swim

Smiling Friends is not entirely over just yet. Two additional episodes from the Season 3 production batch premiere April 12, 2026, at 11 p.m. ET on Adult Swim. Fans should temper their expectations about what these episodes will deliver.

Hadel described them as "little rogue planets" — not tied thematically and not positioned as series finales. They are leftover standalone adventures for Pim, Charlie, Allan, and the gang that simply did not make the initial seasonal rollout. Do not expect a grand goodbye.

Adult Swim released a statement saying: "Everyone at Adult Swim is incredibly proud of what Michael and Zach built and grateful for the bold, boundary-pushing vision behind Smiling Friends."

Is Smiling Friends Really Over for Good? A Door Left Open

Cusack noted: "We could come back in the future and make more episodes if we want, if we feel like it. And they've been super cool and said they would let us do that. But maybe not. Who knows?" That is about as noncommittal as it gets — but it leaves a sliver of hope for future specials or one-off episodes.

Cusack and Hadel, along with producer Aron Fromm, have launched Zam Studios, a new Los Angeles-based independent animation studio, signaling that the duo is not disappearing from the industry — they are simply choosing to build something new. The full run of Smiling Friends Season 3 is available to stream now on Max. The final two Adult Swim episodes air April 12 at 11 p.m. ET.
