Kosiniak-Kamysz: Ready for Potential Middle East Evacuation

In light of escalating tensions following military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has confirmed that Poland’s Ministry of National Defense (MON) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MSZ) are coordinating efforts for a potential evacuation from the Middle East.

Minister’s Assurance of Readiness

Before departing to the United States, Kosiniak-Kamysz addressed the media at the 1st Transport Aviation Base in Warsaw on March 1. His statements highlighted the recent military strikes in the region, particularly the attacks on Tehran and their repercussions, which tragically resulted in a fatality at the Abu Dhabi airport.

Military Measures and Coordination

  • All procedures within the Polish Military Contingents in the Middle East are active to ensure the safety of soldiers.
  • The Operational Command of the Armed Forces is overseeing these safety measures.
  • Preparedness for evacuation is emphasized, especially with many Polish citizens stranded amid closed airspace.

The Vice Prime Minister noted that MON and MSZ are collaboratively ensuring that the Polish Air Force is primed for potential evacuation needs. This preparation is crucial given that many individuals, beyond politicians and soldiers, are remaining in areas where airspace has been restricted. Recent decisions by airlines, such as PLL LOT suspending flights to and from Tel Aviv until at least March 15, have complicated return options for these individuals.

Support for Stranded Citizens

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched a dedicated hotline to assist Polish citizens stranded in the Middle East. Starting from March 1 at 5 PM, citizens can reach out for support at +48 22 523 88 80.

  • The hotline’s operating hours are from 5 PM to 10 PM on the first day and then from 8 AM to 10 PM in subsequent days.
  • The consular service is in contact with citizens and is coordinating with local authorities to ensure safety.
  • For those unable to leave, the UAE has provided accommodation and meals until airspace reopens.

Maciej Wewór, spokesperson for the MSZ, advised citizens to remain calm and to rely on verified sources for information, primarily from official diplomatic channels, to avoid misinformation.

The coordinated response from Polish authorities aims to provide necessary support and ensure the safety of all Polish nationals in the region amidst rising tensions.
