Sag Awards 2026 rebrand brings Netflix broadcast and a 1920s-’30s red carpet theme
The sag awards 2026 arrives Sunday with a new name and a Netflix telecast: the ceremony will stream March 1 at 8 p. m. ET / 5 p. m. PT, with Kristen Bell returning as host for the evening.
Sag Awards 2026 heads to Netflix with an official rename
On November 14 the guild said the flagship ceremony scheduled for streaming on Netflix on March 1, 2026, would henceforth be known as "The Actors Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA. " The announcement explained the change by noting the trophy itself has long been called The Actor and said the refreshed name would help introduce the show to global audiences; the PR messaging insisted that otherwise "everything remains the same. "
The renaming stirred debate: one commentator argued the decision was a mistake that risks diminishing the Screen Actors Guild's historic standing. That piece pointed to the awards' origins, noting NBC telecast the inaugural presentation on February 25, 1995, when Tom Hanks won best actor for Forrest Gump and posed with his statuette and SAG card.
A red carpet theme pulled from the ’20s and ’30s
Organizers this year gave the red carpet an official dress code: Elle chose the theme "Reimagining Hollywood Glamour From the ’20s and ’30s, " directing guests toward flapper-era looks, the Ziegfeld Follies, Art Deco design and surrealist influences like Schiaparelli. The theme arrives with high expectations for standout moments at the carpet ahead of the 8 p. m. ET show.
Past SAG red carpets were called out in previews to illustrate the range of choices: Zeta-Jones’s gold Elie Saab gown at the 2003 ceremony, Emma Stone’s silver halter Louis Vuitton at the 2024 awards, Zendaya’s pink floral Valentino in 2023 and Pedro Pascal’s Prada shirt-and-pants look in 2024 were all cited as memorable moments that shaped audience expectations for tonight.
History, winners and remembered moments
Looking back to the mid-2000s under the SAG Awards name, the 2006 ceremony offered a patchwork of winners: Philip Seymour Hoffman and Reese Witherspoon won lead actor prizes for Capote and Walk the Line, Paul Giamatti and Rachel Weisz took supporting actor honors, and the film Crash won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble with a cast that included Sandra Bullock, Thandiwe Newton, Matt Dillon, Don Cheadle and Brendan Fraser.
Television winners that year included Paul Newman for Empire Falls, Kiefer Sutherland for 24, Sandra Oh for Grey’s Anatomy, Sean Hayes for Will & Grace and Felicity Huffman for Desperate Housewives; Lost won ensemble drama and Desperate Housewives won ensemble comedy. The 2006 red carpet also featured couples such as Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe and Michelle Williams with Heath Ledger walking hand in hand.
Tonight’s broadcast will mark the latest chapter in a ceremony that began in 1995 and has highlighted both screen performances and red carpet flair. The Actor Awards will stream live on Netflix at 8 p. m. ET / 5 p. m. PT, with Kristen Bell hosting and an Elle-curated 1920s–’30s theme guiding red carpet looks. Expect immediate post-show coverage and footage of arrivals and winners after the telecast concludes.
