Flight Tracker: Emirates EK214 Declares Emergency as Middle East Airspace Disruptions Force Widespread Cancellations

An Emirates Boeing 777-300ER operating as EK214 declared a general emergency and diverted to Madrid while en route from Miami to Dubai, a development picked up on flight tracker data as broader airspace disruptions after strikes on Iran prompted cancellations and airport suspensions across the Middle East.

EK214’s in-flight emergency and diversion to Madrid

Emirates flight EK214 departed Miami International Airport (MIA) on Friday, February 27, at 23: 57 ET. The aircraft, registered A6-EQC, was about nine hours into its scheduled 14-hour journey to Dubai International Airport (DXB) when the crew transmitted a Squawk 7700—the international code for a general emergency—while cruising at 31, 000 feet over the Atlantic and just entering French airspace.

Shortly after declaring the emergency, flight tracking data showed the Boeing 777-300ER performing a sharp right turn away from its planned track toward the Middle East. Air traffic controllers coordinated a priority descent as the pilots set a course for Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD). The nature of the emergency has not yet been confirmed by Emirates.

Dubai operations halted and staff injuries at Dubai International

Operations at Dubai Airport have been halted because of the current situation in Iran. All flights in and out of Dubai International and Al Maktoum International airport in Dubai have been suspended. At Dubai International, four members of staff were injured in an incident on Saturday, a detail made public by the airport’s spokesman.

Wider airline suspensions and route cancellations

Airlines are cancelling and diverting services that serve the Middle East after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have grounded flights to the region. British Airways has cancelled services to Tel Aviv and Bahrain until Wednesday and warned that services between Heathrow and Abu Dhabi, Amman, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai or Tel Aviv could be affected for several days.

Virgin Atlantic is suspending services between Heathrow and Riyadh on Sunday after earlier cancelling flights from Heathrow to Dubai on Saturday and Sunday, and warned that flights to India, Saudi Arabia and the Maldives may take longer due to rerouting around the affected region. Wizz Air has suspended all flights to and from Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman up until and including next Saturday.

Qatar airspace closure, passenger experience and public alerts

Iran responded to the strikes by launching attacks including on Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Iranian and Israeli airspace were both closed on Saturday. Qatar Airways confirmed a temporary suspension of flights in and out of the capital, Doha, due to the closure of Qatari airspace, later saying operations would resume at 19: 00 local time on Sunday (16: 00 GMT).

Heathrow urged travellers to check with their airline before setting out. Passengers have been delayed after flights that would have gone over the affected region were diverted. Sarah Short, who was due to return from a holiday in Dubai to Heathrow on Saturday, said she and other passengers boarded and were about to taxi when the pilot announced they were not going anywhere; they then sat on the plane on the tarmac for over three hours. John Henry, 71, from Northampton, who is on holiday in Qatar, was at a shopping centre when they received an air raid alert on Saturday.
