India Aims for Victory, Not Just Participation, in Asian Cup
The Indian women’s football team is poised to make a significant impact at the upcoming AFC Women’s Asian Cup. With determination in their eyes, they have their sights set on more than just participation; they aim for victory.
Asian Cup Overview
The tournament will commence this weekend and take place in Perth, Sydney, and the Gold Coast. This marks the Blue Tigresses’ first appearance in the finals since 2003. Previously, India hosted the 2022 tournament but had to withdraw due to a COVID outbreak among the squad.
Goals and Aspirations
Captain Sweety Devi Ngangbam expressed the team’s goal, stating, “We didn’t come this far just to reach the tournament. We want to win every group game and qualify.” The competition not only serves as a platform for Asian supremacy but also as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. To advance, India needs to secure a place among the last eight teams.
Group Stage Matches
India faces a formidable challenge, drawn into Group C alongside Japan, Vietnam, and Chinese Taipei. Their schedule is grueling, with three matches to play within just seven days.
- Match 1: Against Vietnam on March 4
- Match 2: Against Japan on March 7
- Match 3: Against Chinese Taipei on March 10
Preparation and Training
The team has engaged in intense preparation, spending two weeks in Türkiye. During this time, they played four matches against various European clubs, winning two and drawing one. The aim was to simulate tournament conditions closely.
Ngangbam noted, “This time together is crucial. It helps us understand the level and standards required if we want to do well in Australia.”
Coaching Changes and Team Dynamics
Significant shifts in coaching have influenced the team’s approach. Former under-19 international Crispin Chettri led the squad to the Asian Cup finals after a historic victory over Thailand. Amelia Valverde, formerly of Costa Rica’s national team, has taken charge. Her extensive experience is seen as a pivotal asset.
“Everyone wants to learn from her experience,” Ngangbam remarked, highlighting the excitement for Valverde’s leadership.
Younger Players Stepping Up
For many players, this Asian Cup represents their first exposure to senior international competition. Defender Astam Oraon noted the disparity between youth and senior football. Learning from experienced players has been invaluable, particularly regarding professionalism and preparation.
Looking Ahead to Brazil 2027
The squad is mentally preparing for the challenges ahead. Ngangbam emphasized their commitment to showcasing India’s presence at this level, stating, “Qualifying for the World Cup is our dream.” The ambition is clear: to ensure India competes at every future Asian Cup, starting with a strong performance in Australia.
