Bbc decision: Kaye Adams not returning to bbc Scotland radio role
Kaye Adams will not be returning to her Scotland programme after an internal investigation into complaints about her conduct. The presenter was taken off air last October and the broadcaster has said the current presenter line-up will remain in place in the immediate future.
Suspension in October and the finding on complaints
Adams, 63, was taken off Mornings With on Radio Scotland last October following an internal complaint about her conduct. Some complaints against Adams were upheld while others were rejected; some other allegations were found not to be substantiated. Adams has denied wrongdoing, saying in October that her name had been "dragged through the mud" and that the corporation had not given her the details of the allegations.
Allegations described in the investigation
The inquiry examined complaints that included an accusation she used an "abhorrent swear word" at a colleague, that she threw a pen at a producer in frustration over an upcoming show, and that she berated an intern over their ability to do their job. The inquiry is said to have considered behaviour over many years rather than focusing on a single incident.
Concerns raised after a Pacific Quay meeting
Radio Scotland's head of audio and events, Victoria Easton Riley, became concerned by Adams's conduct during a routine meeting of staff at the broadcaster's Pacific Quay headquarters in Glasgow last year. An insider said Victoria witnessed Kaye's behaviour first hand, then spoke to other members of staff who worked on her programme, and "the floodgates then broke" leading to suspension and a broader investigation.
statement and presenter line-up
A Scotland spokesperson said: "We do not comment on individuals. " A spokesman also confirmed: "With regard to the presentation line up on Mornings With, Kaye Adams will not be returning to this role. " The corporation said the presenter line-up on Mornings With would remain the same "in the immediate future". In the immediate rotation Connie McLaughlin will present Mornings With on Mondays to Wednesdays, with Stephen Jardine presenting on Thursdays and Fridays.
Career background, pay and the Call it Out scheme
Adams, who was born in Falkirk, has worked as a journalist and presenter for nearly 40 years. She initially joined Scotland in 2010 to host Call Kaye, a daily phone-in programme that ended in 2015, and later fronted The Kaye Adams Show and Mornings With. She has also been a regular panellist on the talk show Loose Women. The presenter had been paid on a contract reported elsewhere as £155, 000 a year for the role from which she has been removed.
Last year the corporation launched its "Call it Out" scheme to enable staff to challenge and report poor behaviour in the workplace. That initiative came after an independent report into workplace culture which found that a small number of stars and managers "behave unacceptably" and that bosses fail to tackle them. The Call it Out scheme was set up after controversy involving MasterChef hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode.
Reactions inside the organisation
Adams has been contacted for comment. A source involved in the matter said, "There is no way back for Kaye now. " An insider described the investigation as looking at behaviour over many years rather than a single episode, and noted that concerns gathered from staff prompted the formal action that led to her suspension and eventual removal from the programme.
