Mariners Promote Veteran Slugger in Strategic Roster Move

The Seattle Mariners placed veteran first baseman/outfielder Rob Refsnyder on the paternity list Tuesday ahead of the series opener in San Diego. To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, the club selected Patrick Wisdom from Triple-A Tacoma. The move also required designating right-hander Blas Castaño for assignment to open a 40-man slot.

Roster change and context

The Mariners promoted a veteran slugger as part of a strategic roster move. Wisdom, 34, arrives after a torrid start in Tacoma. He leads the minor leagues with nine home runs in 15 games and hit .264 during that stretch.

Patrick Wisdom profile

Wisdom has produced consistent power at higher levels. He hit 20-plus homers in each season from 2021-23 with the Chicago Cubs. His career high came in 2021 with 28 homers.

He spent the 2025 campaign in the KBO with the Kia Tigers. There he hit .236 with 35 home runs across 119 games. His last MLB season came in 2024, when he batted .171 with eight homers and a .629 OPS in 75 games for the Cubs.

A 2012 first-round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals, Wisdom has appeared in parts of seven major-league seasons. He has played for the Cardinals, Texas Rangers and Cubs. His MLB career slash line stands at .209/.291/.459 with 88 homers and a .750 OPS.

Seattle signed Wisdom to a minor league contract in January. This marks his second stint with the Mariners organization. He initially signed in November 2019 but was released in August 2020 without appearing in a game for the club.

Rob Refsnyder and platoon role

Refsnyder, 35, was signed by Seattle in December as a veteran platoon bat. He has been one of the game’s best hitters against left-handers. From 2022-25, he slashed .312/.407/.516 in 501 plate appearances versus southpaws.

Through his early at-bats with Seattle, Refsnyder has yet to record a hit in 16 attempts. The paternity list move is temporary and allows the club to maintain lineup flexibility.

Blas Castaño designated for assignment

Right-hander Blas Castaño, 27, was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot. He made one major-league appearance for Seattle in May 2025. In that outing he allowed three runs and four hits over three innings.

Implications for the club

The promotion adds left-handed power depth to the bench and DH options. Wisdom’s recent homer surge gives Seattle an immediate power presence. The roster shuffle preserves flexibility while Refsnyder is on the paternity list.
