New Pokemon Starters revealed in Winds and Waves trailer, 2027 release confirmed
During a Pokémon Presents 30th anniversary livestream, the company unveiled Winds and Waves and showed the new pokemon starters in a first look at the 10th generation. The presentation set the new games for release next year on the Nintendo Switch 2 and included a title line that lists a 2027 release date.
New Pokemon Starters: Browt, Pombon and Gecqua introduced
The three starter Pokémon revealed are Browt, a grass-type chick; Pombon, a fiery, Pomeranian-inspired creature; and Gecqua, a water gecko. The trailer presented these three starters alongside early glimpses of the broader open world for Winds and Waves, marking them as the focal trio for the 10th generation.
Final teaser scene: oceanfront home, costumed Pikachus and customization hints
In the final minutes of the presentation, the first teaser for Winds and Waves began in an oceanfront home with a knock at the door. As it opened, two costumed Pikachus appeared, suggesting there will be some new level of customization for the electric icon. One Pikachu wore sunglasses, a white hat and a floral shirt, and the other had a blue cap and a matching dress on.
Short trailer panorama over an unnamed region with familiar Pokémon
The short trailer zoomed over the unnamed region where the games take place and gave quick looks at varied environments. It looked much more expansive and detailed than the worlds shown in Scarlet and Violet or Legends Z-A, offering a sense of scale for exploration in Winds and Waves.
Specific locations and encounters: Tropius, Gloom, Wailord, Tailow and Slugma
The trailer included a tropical forest with a roaming Tropius and Gloom, an ocean with a gigantic Wailord spewing water from its spout, grassy plains with Tailow flying about, and a lava-filled volcano with Slugma oozing around. Those set pieces were presented as discrete vignettes of the region’s biomes and wildlife.
Structures and systems: floating tower, beachside town and a robust day-night cycle
Viewers saw a massive tower floating in the water that could be some kind of gym and a beachside town with buildings connected by aquatic bridges. The presentation also suggested a robust day-night cycle, with different Pokémon appearing during the early morning, sunset and dusk.
Additional releases and legacy titles headed to Nintendo services
Alongside Winds and Waves, FireRed and LeafGreen are coming to Nintendo Switch Online, as is the 2005 GameCube game Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. The new battling game, Pokémon Champions, will release on the Switch in April and on mobile devices later this year.
