Thousands of Western Power Laptops, Valued at $1 Million, Stolen Over 30 Months
Western Power has reported significant losses in electronic equipment, totaling over $1 million, due to theft and mismanagement in just 30 months. From July 2023 to December 2023, the organization lost or had stolen 563 devices, including computers, laptops, and tablets. This alarming statistic implies that nearly one device disappears for every five employees.
Details of the Theft and Loss
The report raises serious concerns about Western Power’s ability to secure taxpayer-funded assets. Shadow Energy Minister Steve Thomas expressed disbelief at these numbers, questioning the government’s operational standards.
Comparative Loss Statistics
During the aforementioned period, Western Power also reported the loss of 198 mobile phones, costing taxpayers an additional $143,000. For comparison, WA Health, which has approximately 50,000 employees, reported significantly fewer losses: 90 computers and 63 phones.

Future Implications and Accountability

The agency will play a vital role in the transition towards renewable energy in the coming years. He called upon Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson to explain the situation and the sensitive information potentially at risk due to these losses.
Western Power’s Response
In response to the thefts, Western Power stated that the lost laptops represent about 2% of its inventory. The agency has committed to reviewing its security measures to minimize future losses and ensure better management of its electronic equipment.
