Sri Lanka Women Vs West Indies Women: Sri Lanka seek rare away 3-0 sweep in Grenada
Sri Lanka Women Vs West Indies Women reaches its third and final One-Day International at Grenada today, with Sri Lanka already having clinched the series after two tight victories and now aiming for a rare 3-0 whitewash away from home.
Sri Lanka have the series in hand after two narrow wins
Sri Lanka recorded a 10-run victory in the first ODI on Friday and followed it with an equally narrow 14-run win in the second ODI 48 hours later, leaving the tourists with a historic series triumph already behind them and the chance to complete an away sweep they have not achieved since 2003. The third and final ODI at Grenada today is part of the ICC Women’s Championship, with points at stake for direct qualification for the 2029 Women’s World Cup.
Sri Lanka’s batting core and spin attack have driven the results
Across the series Sri Lanka’s batting has revolved around Hasini Perera, Chamari Athapaththu, Harshitha Samarawickarama and Vishmi Gunaratne, with notable contributions also from Nilakshika Silva and Kavisha Dilhari. The visitors have defended reasonably competitive but low totals in the first two ODIs and will hope at least one batter can play a long innings on the slow turners put out for this series by their hosts.
The Lankan spin trio of Inoka Ranaweera, Kavisha Dilhari and Sugandika Kumari have shared 13 wickets across the first two clashes against the Hayley Mathews-led side, a statistic that has been central to the visitors’ control of the series so far.
Controversial moments and a late Windies collapse
Deandra Dottin was then disputably given out for obstructing the field after catching a ball with her glove that bounced off her bat, and three runs later, Aaliyah Alleyne was dismissed after just one run with the score 119 for 7. The hosts also saw youngster Jannillea Glasgow stand out with twin half centuries while batting in the lower middle order, but the rest of the Windies batting has struggled to come to grips with both the deck and the variations from Sri Lanka’s slow bowlers.
What a sweep or consolation win would mean
Chamari Athapaththu’s team will aim for their first away sweep against the Maroon Warriors since 2003, while the hosts will strive to avoid their first home whitewash (3-0) in a bilateral series since being swept by the England Women’s team four years ago. Sri Lanka’s previous clean sweep in a bilateral ODI series was also against the Maroon Warriors when they blanked that side 3-0 at home in 2024.
Next: final ODI today and what comes after
The third and final ODI at Grenada is scheduled for today; with the series already wrapped up for Sri Lanka, attention will fall on whether the visitors can defend low totals again or will be asked to chase in the last encounter. Got a hot tip for our calendar? Tell us about it!
