West Brom club statement: west brom part company with Eric Ramsay
West Brom have parted company with men’s first-team head coach Eric Ramsay, the club confirmed. The move comes after a 44-day spell in charge that yielded no wins in nine matches, and First Team Coach James Morrison will oversee first-team affairs on an interim basis.
Club statement and interim coach
The club statement said West Bromwich Albion have parted company with men’s first team Head Coach Eric Ramsay. It added that Assistant Head Coach Dennis Lawrence has also departed The Hawthorns. The statement placed on record the club’s thanks to Eric and Dennis and said the club wishes them well for the future. It confirmed First Team Coach James Morrison will oversee first-team affairs on an interim basis.
West Brom sack Ramsay after 44 days
Ramsay was sacked after just 44 days in charge at The Hawthorns. The 34-year-old had been appointed on a two-and-a-half-year deal on 11 January following the departure of Ryan Mason. He failed to win any of his nine matches in charge overall.
On-field record and results
During his short spell Ramsay did not record a victory in the eight Championship matches he oversaw. The Baggies picked up just four points under the 34-year-old, drawing four and losing four of their Championship matches. West Brom were also knocked out of the FA Cup after a defeat at Norwich City.
Boardroom meeting and fan reaction
The decision followed a 1-1 home draw with Charlton in the Championship. Ramsay’s side were booed off after that match. The head coach and his assistant Dennis Lawrence were summoned to meet with the club owner and chairman, Shilen Patel, in the boardroom after the game.
Managerial record and predecessors
Ramsay’s 44-day stint set a new club record for the shortest permanent managerial reign in West Brom’s history, surpassing the previous record of 17 games held by Pepe Mel and Tony Mowbray. The former Manchester United coach had made the step up from managing Minnesota United in MLS to take the Albion job, but could not inspire a victory in his nine matches, including eight in the Championship.
Ramsay's assessment after Charlton draw
Speaking after the 1-1 draw with Charlton, Eric Ramsay said: "We're not talking about this performance in isolation - we are adding this to multiple draws, not enough wins and not enough getting over the line so it has the feeling of a step backwards. I know what this situation needs at the moment - it needs wins, it doesn't need draws. The number of chances were enough to win the game but it wasn't good enough. "
At the time of Ramsay's departure West Brom sat 21st in the Championship, one point above the relegation zone and one point off the drop zone in some descriptions, with the club seeking a change of direction as James Morrison prepares to take interim charge.
