Winter storm warnings stretched from North Carolina to northern Maine, with warnings also in place in parts of eastern Canada. In total, blizzard warnings covered almost 70 million people and millions across the US north-east remained under a state of emergency.

Non-emergency road travel was banned in New York City because of "dangerous blizzard conditions", with snow blanketing the city. Wind gusts of up to 60mph were recorded, and wind chills of -15C (5F) were measured in New York. Weather service meteorologist Frank Pereira warned, "We're expecting conditions to rapidly deteriorate, " and said the storm could possibly become a "bomb cyclone" — a storm that drops at least 24 millibars in pressure in 24 hours. "I think when all is said and done, it will meet the definition of a bomb cyclone, " he added.
Snow totals and records
The storm produced extreme totals in parts of the region. Parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts saw as much as 33 inches (83cm) of snowfall. Providence, Rhode Island, received 33in (83cm), smashing the existing record for the single greatest snowstorm, 28. 6in (72. 6cm) set in February 1978. New York's Central Park recorded over 19 inches of snow and was also described as having almost 20in (51cm). Coverage of the event variously described the snowfall as nearly two feet in some places, forecasters warned of up to two feet in others, and some reports put totals at more than two feet in certain areas.
Power outages and flights
The storm forced widespread cancellations and left large numbers without power. More than 5, 600 flights into and out of the US were cancelled, while other tallies put the total at 5, 300 cancelled flights and more than 700 delayed. Nearly 90% of flights out of JFK airport were cancelled, with figures even higher at LaGuardia and in Boston. Over 600, 000 homes and businesses were without power, with New Jersey and Massachusetts the worst hit. Another count put the number of homes affected by power cuts at almost 650, 000, and in Massachusetts alone roughly 255, 000 homes faced outages. School classes were cancelled or moved online in New York City, Boston and Philadelphia.
Human stories and reactions
In New York City the snow was described as shin-deep and trees fell across streets, with reporter Brandon Livesay noting the scale of disruption. Time-lapse footage showed the Empire State Building engulfed by snow overnight. Resident Mickey Blank said it "doesn't happen too often in the city that the road is covered and you have to go through mountains of snow" and described the conditions as "a very unique experience. " Berliner Peggy Ferber woke up early to visit Times Square in the snow. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called it the "first old-school snow day since 2019. " Reporters battled extreme conditions on the ground as efforts to clear streets and restore services continued. Live coverage of the event was ended for the day by one outlet as crews and residents began to dig out.
The snow has started to taper off, but with so much on the ground it could take several days for life to return to normal on the East Coast. Parts of Canada's Atlantic Coast were also affected by the storm. It was the first time in nine years that New York City had been placed under a blizzard warning.
With travel curtailed, power outages widespread and record totals in places, officials urged patience as crews work to restore services and clear roads.
