UK Government Awards £380 Million Grant to Agratas Gigafactory
In a significant move for the UK’s battery manufacturing sector, the government announced a substantial grant of £380 million to Agratas. This funding aims to support the development of Agratas’s new gigafactory located in Somerset. The investment is expected to bolster the UK’s ambitions to enhance its role in the global battery industry and contribute to net-zero goals.
Impact of the Grant on Agratas Gigafactory
Earl Wiggins, Vice President of Manufacturing Operations for Agratas in the UK, expressed enthusiasm about the government’s investment. He noted that the factory will be crucial in producing battery cells, particularly for their key client, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
Job Creation and Future Plans
The project anticipates creating over 2,200 job opportunities at the site within the next year. This workforce growth aligns with Agratas’s strategy to expand operations in the coming years.
Construction and Development Updates
- Severfield is responsible for the main steelwork on the site.
- TClarke recently withdrew from the mechanical and electrical delivery team.
- Costain secured a £123 million contract earlier this year to design and construct a new junction on the M5 motorway.
This infrastructure development will serve the needs of the new gigafactory, further emphasizing the strategic importance of the location in Somerset.
The funding from the UK Government, along with the anticipated job creation, highlights the focus on sustainable energy solutions and the growing significance of battery technology in the automotive sector.
