Boston Weather

Boston and all of Massachusetts are being hammered by the Blizzard of 2026 — the most powerful nor'easter to strike New England in nearly half a century. A powerful, historic nor'easter has paralyzed the state, knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of residents, shut down Logan Airport, and forced the MBTA to suspend operations. Boston weather conditions turned to full blizzard criteria around 9:20 a.m. ET Monday, confirmed by the National Weather Service. As of 2:00 p.m. ET Monday, February 23, 2026, the storm is still raging — and the outage crisis is deepening by the hour.

Eversource Outage Map: 239,000+ Without Power — 3 to 5 Day Restoration Warning

Eversource had more than 238,000 outages as of 2:00 p.m. ET Monday. Eversource spokesperson Olessa Stepanova said damage reports started coming in around 3:30 a.m. "Safety and access is going to dictate the pace of restoration. We're just asking customers to be patient and prepare for a long duration event." She warned customers to allow 72 to 120 hours — three to five days potentially — in the hardest-to-reach areas.

Cape Cod is the hardest-hit area, with more than 103,000 customers without power in Barnstable County alone.

Town / Area Outage Status
Cape Cod / Barnstable County 103,000+ — most severely hit region
Marshfield 6,000+ customers dark
Quincy 3,708 customers without power
Gloucester (North Shore) 2,478 outages
Hamilton Entire town — 3,000+ customers out
Orleans, Barnstable Over 60% of customers affected

Boston Blizzard 2026: Snow Totals, Wind Gusts, and Historic Records

Nantucket recorded a peak wind gust of 83 mph just after 9:00 a.m. ET. Wellfleet, Chatham, Hull, and the west end of Falmouth all topped 70 mph. At one point, snow was falling at a rate of four inches an hour in southeastern Massachusetts.

Rhode Island's T.F. Green Airport in Warwick set a new state 24-hour snow record at 32.8 inches — eclipsing the previous record of 30 inches set during the Blizzard of '78. East Providence and North Kingstown reached 33.5 inches by 2:00 p.m. ET. In Massachusetts, the highest snowfall was in Somerset at nearly 29 inches by 2:00 p.m.

Latest Massachusetts snow totals as of midday:

Location Snow Total
Somerset, MA ~29 inches
Swansea / New Bedford / Dartmouth 24+ inches
Foxborough 19+ inches
Millis 9.5 inches
Hanover / Hopkinton 8.0 inches
Boston (Logan Airport) 5–6 inches (still accumulating)

This is one that is at the top of the scale for anything southeastern Massachusetts has ever seen in terms of snowfall, according to WBZ-TV chief meteorologist Eric Fisher.

Logan Airport: 92% of Flights Canceled — MBTA Running Reduced Service

Data from FlightAware shows 92% of flights departing Boston Logan and 86% of incoming flights on February 23 have been canceled. MBTA trains, buses, and commuter rail are all running at reduced, Sunday-like schedules today — and all ferry service is canceled. The T says Tuesday service is also likely to be slower than usual as crews dig out.

What Massachusetts Residents Must Do Right Now

Anyone who loses power is urged to call 211 to find the nearest warming center. Governor Maura Healey declared a Massachusetts state of emergency ahead of the storm and deployed 200 members of the National Guard. State Highway Administrator Johnathan Gulliver advised drivers to stay off the roads completely. He expects interstates to be mostly cleared by the Tuesday morning commute, but warned that local roadways may take longer to clean up.

The immediate action checklist for every Massachusetts and Boston-area resident:

  • Stay off all roads until the storm eases — expected between 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. ET tonight
  • Check the Eversource outage map at eversource.com or call 1-800-286-2000
  • Check the National Grid outage map at nationalgridus.com or call 1-800-465-1212
  • Call 211 to locate the nearest warming center if you have lost power and heat
  • Use generators outdoors only — carbon monoxide poisoning is a leading storm-related killer
  • Do not shovel without rest breaks — wet, heavy snow dramatically increases cardiac risk
  • Tuesday may also be a snow day — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu did not rule out the possibility that Tuesday could also be a snow day.
