Sagrada Familia Completes Exterior of Temple’s Tallest Jesus Tower
The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the exterior of the tallest Jesus Tower. This achievement includes the installation of the cross’s upper arm, enhancing the tower’s structure and marking a major construction phase for the temple.
Milestone Achieved: The Tallest Jesus Tower
On February 20, 2026, the final element of the cross was added to the Jesus Tower, making it the highest point of the entire temple. The cross stands at 17 meters tall with a width of 13.5 meters, constructed from a combination of glass and white glazed ceramic.
Construction Details
- The total height of the Jesus Tower reaches 172.5 meters.
- The construction commenced on October 16, 2018.
- The last panel of the tower was completed on December 4, 2024, bringing the structure to 142.5 meters.
- The upper arm installation marks the conclusion of external construction.
The cross was initially fabricated in Germany and transported in modules for assembly on-site. Seven components were carefully combined to complete the structure: the lower arm, central core, four lateral arms, and finally, the upper arm. This innovative approach allowed for prefabrication and efficient assembly at considerable heights.
Upcoming Plans
Interior work on the tower will continue through 2027 and 2028. Notably, a sculpture of the Agnus Dei by Italian artist Andrea Mastrovito will be placed at the tower’s apex, as envisioned by architect Antoni Gaudí. This detail adds a spiritual element that will be visible from within the cross.
Significance of the Completion
The completion of the Jesus Tower is especially poignant, coinciding with the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death. It is a tribute to the architect’s vision and commitment to the Sagrada Familia project. Events are planned to honor Gaudí and showcase the progress made on the temple.
According to chief architect Jordi Faulí, “The completion of the Jesus Tower represents years of dedication and a commitment to the future of the Sagrada Família.” This landmark achievement not only celebrates the legacy of Gaudí but also the ongoing efforts to finalize this monumental basilica.
