Wind Advisory set for southern Michigan as gusts reach 45 mph

A wind advisory will be in effect across Michigan’s southern tier from Friday morning until 9 p. m. ET, bringing southwesterly winds up to 30 mph and gusts as high as 45 mph — a setup that could blow around unsecured objects and make driving difficult for high‑profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory covers southern tier Friday

The National Weather Service has warned that gusty winds will be strongest during the afternoon hours on Friday, with the agency noting that "tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. " The advisory covers the entire southern tier of the state and highlights the potential impact on tractor‑trailers, SUVs and recreational vehicles.

Fog, hail and the stalled warm front

Meteorologist Dave Kook at the National Weather Service's White Lake Township office traced the pattern to a "stalled warm front" across the region, saying "Being located near that front causes persistent fog and rain chances. " Dense fog reduced visibility to a quarter‑mile or less during Thursday morning commutes, prompting the NWS to advise drivers to limit their speed and use low‑beam headlights. Hail also fell Wednesday evening, with half‑dollar‑size stones reported in China Township in St. Clair County and Fowlerville in Livingston County, and quarter‑size hail reported in Dansville in Ingham County and Tyrone Township in Livingston County.

Weekend flip: colder air and a return of snow

Rain showers are expected to accompany the strong winds across much of southern Michigan on Friday morning, and temperatures will begin to fall later in the day with a forecast high of 49 degrees on Friday. Colder air moves in for the weekend with highs of 40 on Saturday and 38 on Sunday. Sunday brings a better chance for snow, with Detroit placed at a 70% chance and the southwest portion of the state given an 80% chance; the colder temperatures and snow showers are likely to linger into Monday, especially in southwest Michigan.

Drivers and residents should prepare for the wind advisory and the gusty conditions Friday, keep an eye on local forecasts for timing of rain and mixing, and expect the next confirmed shift to arrive with Sunday’s snow and colder temperatures that will extend into Monday.
