The evacuation notice that had sent residents out of Herndon was rescinded shortly after 7 p. m. ET Tuesday, with the county fire chief stating the blaze was roughly 80% contained and no longer posed a threat to the city. Local law enforcement advised that those who had evacuated could now return to their homes.

Fast-moving grass fire prompted earlier evacuations
The same fire had prompted an evacuation order earlier in the day when it moved toward Herndon from the northwest. Emergency management tracking placed the main front of the grass fire approximately 4 to 5 miles northwest of Herndon around 4 p. m. ET, moving southeast toward the town.
Officials established a shelter for displaced residents in Atwood at the Redeemer Lutheran Church on 1st Street. Emergency crews from the county and mutual aid partners prioritized protecting life and property while combating the blaze that spread rapidly across dry grasslands.
