Evacuation Order Lifted for NW Kansas Community After Wildfire; red flag (fire weather) warning Highlighted Risks
Authorities lifted an evacuation order for the town of Herndon late Tuesday after a fast-moving grass fire threatened the community earlier in the day. Fire crews achieved significant containment and residents were safe to return home just after 7 p. m. ET.
Containment improves; residents cleared to return
The evacuation notice that had sent residents out of Herndon was rescinded shortly after 7 p. m. ET Tuesday, with the county fire chief stating the blaze was roughly 80% contained and no longer posed a threat to the city. Local law enforcement advised that those who had evacuated could now return to their homes.
There were no injuries reported during the incident, with emergency personnel confirming no casualties as of 3: 30 p. m. ET. Crews remained on scene into the evening to monitor hot spots and secure the perimeter while assessing damage to structures and property.
Fast-moving grass fire prompted earlier evacuations
The same fire had prompted an evacuation order earlier in the day when it moved toward Herndon from the northwest. Emergency management tracking placed the main front of the grass fire approximately 4 to 5 miles northwest of Herndon around 4 p. m. ET, moving southeast toward the town.
Officials established a shelter for displaced residents in Atwood at the Redeemer Lutheran Church on 1st Street. Emergency crews from the county and mutual aid partners prioritized protecting life and property while combating the blaze that spread rapidly across dry grasslands.
Conditions and response
Firefighters worked under challenging conditions typical for grass fires, where wind and dry fuel can drive rapid growth. Local emergency management and county fire units coordinated the response, deploying resources to establish control lines and protect homes in the town's path.
With containment now substantially improved, incident commanders shifted focus from evacuation management to suppression, mop-up and post-fire assessment. Residents returning to Herndon were advised to remain cautious around burn areas and to report any lingering smoke or hot spots to emergency authorities.
The situation remained fluid throughout the day, and officials emphasized the importance of following direction from emergency personnel during active wildfire events. Further updates will be provided by local authorities if conditions change.
