Algeria’s Ramadan Start Date Announced by Sirius Association
The Sirius Association has released a detailed announcement regarding the astronomical data related to the sighting of the Ramadan crescent for the year 1447 AH (2026 AD). The statement provides information on the conditions for moon sighting and the start date for fasting.
Algeria’s Ramadan Start Date for 2026
According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the critical observation night will be on the evening of 29 Sha’ban 1447 AH, which corresponds to Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The conjunction of the Ramadan crescent will occur on the same day at 1:01 PM local time.
Crescent Observation Challenges
The Sirius Association noted that the crescent’s age at sunset that evening will not be sufficient for visibility with the naked eye in Algeria. Under astronomical principles, the moon will only be visible above the horizon for approximately six minutes after sunset in Algiers.
Additionally, a central annular solar eclipse will coincide with the conjunction; however, this phenomenon will not be observable from the region. Despite the moon being above the horizon during sunset, the crescent will not have formed enough for a sighting.
First Day of Ramadan
Based on astronomical data, it is concluded that Sha’ban will complete 30 days. Thus, the start date for Ramadan in Algeria will be Thursday, February 19, 2026. This determination relies on direct visual sighting of the crescent.
Global Visibility Estimates
- The inability to see the crescent on February 17 extends across the Arab world and the African continent.
- Even in North and South America, sighting the crescent will be challenging, even with telescopes.
- Visibility with the naked eye may only be possible in the far western regions of North America.
This limits the relevance of such sightings within Algeria from a local jurisprudential perspective. The conclusions from the Sirius Association align with international astronomical bodies and observations from various research centers, including the International Crescent Observation Project (ICOP).
Authority on Ramadan Observations
Finally, the Sirius Association emphasized that the only authorized body to issue a fatwa concerning the start of Ramadan is the Crescent Committee under the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
