Sony Develops New Charlie’s Angels Movie

Sony Pictures is making a comeback with a new feature version of the iconic franchise, Charlie’s Angels. The studio has hired Pete Chiarelli, acclaimed for his work on “The Proposal” and the adaptation of “Crazy Rich Asians,” to write the script. Although details about production remain vague, sources suggest that Drew Barrymore’s Flower Films, which was behind the original films, might be involved.

Charlie’s Angels: A Legacy of Empowering Women

Originally airing from 1976 to 1981, the television series “Charlie’s Angels” quickly became a pop culture phenomenon. It starred Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith as three skilled female detectives. The show featured the Townsend Agency and its enigmatic owner, Charlie Townsend, while Bosley served as the liaison to the agency.

The franchise leaped to the big screen in 2000, produced by Columbia Pictures. This adaptation starred Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu, directed by McG. The film was a commercial success, grossing approximately $264.1 million worldwide (over $493 million in today’s currency). A sequel, “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” followed in 2003.

Recent Attempts and Setbacks

In 2011, Sony attempted to launch a new television series, but it was canceled following only seven episodes. More recently, in 2019, the studio released another feature film directed by Elizabeth Banks, featuring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. This version expanded the Townsend Agency’s premise, establishing it as a global intelligence service. Unfortunately, it did not perform well at the box office.

The Future of Charlie’s Angels

The new project is currently in the early development stages. Chiarelli has transitioned from producer to screenwriter, previously finding success with movies like “Now You See Me 2” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” He is also working on “GOAT,” a new feature from Sony Pictures Animation produced by basketball star Stephen Curry.

As the franchise re-emerges, fans await further announcements on casting and production details. With its rich history, the new Charlie’s Angels film seeks to continue the tradition of highlighting strong female protagonists in action-centric narratives.
