New 4-Lane Bridge Opens Saturday, Permanently Replacing Pattullo

Beginning Saturday, February 14, 2026, the new 4-lane Stal̕əw̓asəm (“Riverview”) Bridge will officially open to traffic, marking a significant infrastructure milestone. This new bridge permanently replaces the old Pattullo Bridge, which has been closed to vehicles.

Closure of the Pattullo Bridge

The Pattullo Bridge, a vital link over the Fraser River since its opening in 1937, is now closed for good. This closure ends a longstanding chapter in regional travel and connectivity. However, the sidewalk on the Pattullo will remain accessible for cyclists and pedestrians until the morning of February 17, 2026.

Transition to the New Bridge

On February 6, the Pattullo Bridge and the new Stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge were temporarily closed for necessary construction work. This allowed crews to finalize the roadway connections on both sides of the new span, integrating it effectively with transportation routes in Surrey and New Westminster.

  • The new Stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge opens at 7 a.m. on February 14.
  • Initial plans included a phased reopening of both bridges, but only the new bridge will be used for vehicle traffic.
  • Full deconstruction of the Pattullo Bridge will take approximately two years, beginning this month.

Details of the Stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge

Constructed at a cost of $1.6 billion, the Stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge features four lanes. This project faced delays and debates over its capacity, with some advocating for six lanes instead of four. The bridge’s name honors First Nations heritage, as “Stal̕əw̓asəm” translates to “place to view the river” in the Indigenous halkomelem language.

Announced on December 8, 2025, the name recognizes the deep historical and current connections of Indigenous peoples to the area, as stated by B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Transit.

Future Developments

On the Surrey side, improvements including a new Highway 17 off-ramp, multi-use paths, and sidewalks are expected to be completed by mid-2026. These enhancements depend on the gradual removal of the Pattullo Bridge.

Fraser Crossing Partners secured the contract for designing and building the replacement bridge, which will be owned and maintained by the B.C. government. For more information about the bridge replacement project, visit Filmogaz.com.
