Seoul Faces First Emergency Reduction Measures Amid High Temperatures and Smog
Seoul has implemented its first emergency reduction measures for fine dust this year due to severe air pollution and high temperatures. These measures took effect at 6 AM and will last until 9 PM today. In addition to Seoul, the measures have also been extended to Incheon, Gyeonggi Province, and the Yeongseo region of Gangwon, as these areas also reported excessive pollutant levels.
Impact of Air Pollution in Seoul
The National Institute of Environmental Research indicated that stagnant atmospheric conditions combined with smog have led to a daily average concentration of fine particulate matter exceeding 50 µg/m³ in the capital and surrounding areas. Experts predict that elevated pollution levels will persist in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and the Yeongseo regions throughout the day.
Emergency Reduction Measures
- Public vehicle access to government institutions will be restricted through a two-part system.
- Operational hours for administrative and public institutions will be shortened.
These emergency measures aim to mitigate health risks associated with poor air quality, particularly during the upcoming holiday weekend. Following this period of heightened pollution, forecasts suggest that easterly winds next week could gradually alleviate the current air quality issues.
