Director Finds Double Vince Vaughn Perfect for ‘Mike & Nick & Alice’
BenDavid Grabinski has written for television, film, and video games. He recently expanded his work into a high-concept comedy-thriller. His second film as director, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, mixes buddy comedy, gangster drama, and time travel. The picture is now streaming on Hulu.
Career background and recent projects
Grabinski collaborated with Bryan Lee O’Malley on Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. He also pitched the more experimental game Scott Pilgrim EX. Those projects share his taste for emotionally smart worlds that are also silly and inventive.
Cast and central plot
The film pairs James Marsden as Mike with Vince Vaughn as Nick. Vaughn plays two versions of Nick, including a time-traveling future self. Keith David plays the gang boss convinced Mike is a snitch. Jimmy Tatro portrays the boss’s son, whose prison term fuels the conflict. Eiza González appears as Alice, Nick’s wife and Mike’s secret lover.
Plot stakes
Future Nick arrives to stop present-day violence. The mission is to keep Mike from being killed. That twist shifts the movie from a simple comedy into a tense, emotional ride.
Style, choreography, and emotional core
Grabinski aims for heightened comedy and staged action to reflect real emotions. He compares tightly choreographed action to dance. He cast Marsden partly for his musical-film experience, believing those skills translate to action.
Speaking to Filmogaz.com, Grabinski said choreography often informs storytelling. He treats big fight set pieces and musical-style staging as expressive tools.
On-set problem solving
The production faced a key technical hurdle: twinning Vince Vaughn. The director finds that a double Vince Vaughn was essential for many scenes. To capture two Vinces in the same frame, the crew used motion-control rigs and crane-mounted repeatable camera moves.
They built a hallway on a sound stage. The team timed repeated takes so each version of Vaughn could match the other. Grabinski also left room for the actor’s spontaneous ideas, adapting camera plans when necessary.
Production approach and tone
Grabinski favors heavy prep and logistical problem solving. He balances chasing creative impulses with setting production rules. That method allowed big set pieces to stay playful while supporting emotional truth.
The film also leans into its comic gangster characters. Much of the early action centers on partying and camaraderie. The tone then tightens as time-travel complications arrive.
Distribution
Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is available to stream on Hulu. The film carries a 20th Century Studios credit.
