Police Investigate Illegal Weight-Loss Drug Sales at North Wales Salons

A police investigation has been initiated regarding the unlawful sale of weight-loss medications in North Wales. Authorities are particularly focusing on beauty salons in Wrexham and Flintshire, where these substances are purportedly being sold.

Details of the Investigation

North Wales Police have conducted raids on three premises as part of this investigation, recovering suspicious medications. Among the substances seized are:

  • Retatrutide – currently unlicensed for use in the UK
  • Counterfeit versions of Tirzepatide (Mounjaro)
  • Counterfeit versions of Semaglutide (Ozempic)

Three individuals have been arrested on allegations of fraud. Detective Inspector Claire Roberts emphasized the ongoing nature of this probe and urged the public to report any related information.

Health Risks of Counterfeit Weight-Loss Drugs

A spokesperson from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) cautioned the public about the potential dangers of purchasing unregulated medications. Key points include:

  • Retatrutide remains in clinical development and is not approved for UK use.
  • Products claiming to contain this substance could be unsafe and are likely sold outside the legal supply chain.
  • Authorization for weight-loss medications typically requires a prescription from a healthcare professional.

The MHRA also warned that unregulated purchases significantly elevate the risk of acquiring falsified products, which may contain inaccurate dosages or harmful ingredients.

Advice from Health Officials

Rick Lines, head of the substance misuse program at Public Health Wales, highlighted the severe risks associated with the online purchase of prescription medications. He noted:

  • There is no assurance that purchased products are genuine or safe.
  • Prescription medicines should only be obtained through authorized channels.
  • Inappropriate use can result in serious health consequences.

For anyone concerned about weight management or health issues, consulting with a GP or pharmacist is strongly recommended to ensure safe and appropriate care.
