Joey Porter Sr. Criticizes Ben Roethlisberger’s Character in Steelers Remarks
Joey Porter Sr., a former linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has publicly criticized the character of his former quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger. During a recent podcast appearance, Porter expressed his disappointment with Roethlisberger, stating that he is “not a good person.” The remarks were made in the context of Roethlisberger and former Steeler James Harrison’s criticisms of Mike Tomlin, the recently departed head coach.
Joey Porter Sr. Discusses Steelers Brotherhood
Porter’s comments came during an episode of Cameron Heyward’s podcast, “Not Just Football.” He stated that both Roethlisberger and Harrison had violated a code of conduct among teammates. “Harrison broke the brotherhood,” Porter remarked, adding that Roethlisberger “definitely broke the brotherhood.”
Porter emphasized his disappointment by suggesting that Roethlisberger should refrain from discussing Steelers matters. “If we talk Steelers business, his ass is foul of all foul,” he said. Despite winning Super Bowl XL with Roethlisberger at the end of the 2005 season, Porter insisted that he does not consider him a good teammate.
Allegations of Poor Conduct
- Porter highlighted an incident where Roethlisberger refused to sign memorabilia for teammates’ families.
- He stated that as a captain, Roethlisberger lacked the necessary qualities to lead the team.
- Porter recalled a situation involving veterans Chris Hoke and Aaron Smith, where Roethlisberger was too dismissive in his interactions.
He noted that Roethlisberger was given the captaincy rather than being elected by teammates, suggesting it was an undeserved appointment. “Nobody’s going to vote for him as captain because he doesn’t have no captain quality,” Porter said.
Roethlisberger’s Comments on Coach Tomlin
In the lead-up to Tomlin’s exit from the Steelers, Roethlisberger suggested it might be time for a change in coaching. He indicated that Tomlin should have the right to move on, a comment he later downplayed. This has added to the criticism directed towards him.
Historical Context and Team Reaction
Porter is not alone in his criticisms. Following Roethlisberger’s past troubles, including a suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, teammates like Hines Ward deemed the suspension justified. Current Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph also supported Porter’s views on social media.
Porter left the Steelers in 2007, and in 2010, Roethlisberger admitted to losing sight of his values during his career. “I lost track of who Ben Roethlisberger was,” he reflected.
Acknowledged as a three-time All Pro linebacker, Porter maintains connections with the Steelers. He served as their outside linebackers coach from 2015 to 2018. His son, Joey Porter Jr., was drafted by the Steelers in 2023, furthering the Porter family’s legacy with the team.
