California Congressman Denounces ICE at Super Bowl Event
California Congressman Ro Khanna took a stand against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the Super Bowl event held at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. He aimed to communicate to his constituents that federal immigration agents were not welcome at this significant sporting event.
Congressman’s Message Against ICE
On Sunday, Khanna emphasized the importance of elected officials being present in the community. He stated, “This is my district, and this is a time for elected leaders to be outside with people.” His efforts included voicing his concerns to both the NFL and federal administration regarding ICE’s potential presence at the game.
Earlier this month, NFL security officer Cathy Lanier expressed confidence that ICE would not operate at the Super Bowl. In contrast, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem had confirmed earlier that ICE would be actively participating. “We’ll be all over that place,” she had remarked.
Community Concerns
Khanna reported an influx of inquiries from local residents worried about possible ICE raids. To support his constituents, he kept his district office open for assistance during the event. As of 2 p.m. on that day, there were no reports of ICE activity.
- 21 Democratic lawmakers, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, signed a letter opposing ICE operations at the Super Bowl.
- The lawmakers emphasized the importance of public safety and community integrity during such celebratory events.
Protest Against ICE and Trump
Khanna was not alone in his opposition to ICE. A group of around 24 protesters gathered near the stadium, displaying a large banner reading, “Trump must go now.” Their protests included chants and signs that criticized both ICE and the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
- Activist Shasti Conrad and Michael Ceraso distributed rally towels that stated “ICE OUT” and featured a whimsical rabbit design inspired by halftime performer Bad Bunny.
- Ceraso noted the need to speak out against the fear many face due to immigration policies.
The Impact of ICE Policies
Activists voiced their concerns about the aggressive tactics used by ICE, including the controversial use of children as bait during raids. The tragic killings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents have further amplified fears regarding ICE’s practices.
The Super Bowl became a platform for advocates to call for an end to ICE’s presence at such significant national events, highlighting the ongoing debates around immigration enforcement in the United States.
