Tesco Acquires Closed Amazon Fresh Locations to Expand Convenience Stores

Tesco has announced a significant expansion of its convenience store branch, primarily through the acquisition of five former Amazon Fresh locations. This strategic move aims to bolster Tesco’s presence in key urban areas, particularly across London.

Tesco Expands Convenience Stores with Former Amazon Fresh Locations

By March of the upcoming year, Tesco plans to launch over 70 new Express stores nationwide. This expansion includes at least five new sites located in bustling London neighborhoods.

Acquisition of Amazon Fresh Locations

The newly acquired Amazon Fresh locations will be transitioned into Tesco Express stores. The specific sites are:

  • Kensington High Street
  • Hounslow
  • Moorgate
  • Aldgate East
  • Wembley

These stores are expected to reopen ahead of summer, enhancing Tesco’s convenience offerings in the capital.

Further Expansion Plans

In addition to the London locations, Tesco is also set to open new Express stores in various parts of the UK, including:

  • Bickington, Devon
  • Pontrhydyrun, Torfaen
  • Wallyford, East Lothian

In total, Tesco opened 60 Express stores throughout 2025. The additional openings signify the retailer’s commitment to meeting the diverse needs of communities across the country.

Statements from Tesco

Nick Johnson, Tesco Group Property Director, expressed enthusiasm about this growth. He emphasized the company’s role in supporting local jobs and economies. “We are delighted to be able to serve even more people with great quality and exceptional value,” he remarked.

The End of Amazon Fresh in the UK

The closures of Amazon Fresh stores mark the end of the tech giant’s supermarket experiment in the UK. Amazon had introduced a till-less shopping experience but struggled to gain a foothold among established supermarkets.

The company announced its decision to close all 19 UK stores in September, just four years after launching the concept. In the wake of this exit, five of the Amazon Fresh locations will be converted into Whole Foods Market stores, which focus on organic products.

Expect to see continued innovation and competition in the retail sector as Tesco leads the charge in expanding its convenience store network.
