Team USA Announces Opening Ceremony Flag Bearers for Milan Cortina Olympics
Team USA has officially announced its flag bearers for the opening ceremony of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Speedskater Erin Jackson and bobsledder Frank Del Duca will represent the United States as the Games commence on February 6.
Flag Bearers
Erin Jackson, a celebrated speedskater, won a gold medal in the women’s 500 meters at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Frank Del Duca, a bobsledder and U.S. Army Sergeant, also competed in the previous Olympics. Both athletes were selected through a vote among Team USA members.
Erin Jackson’s Journey
During her appearance on TODAY from Milan, Jackson expressed her gratitude for the honor. “It means so much… I’ve been voting for you like crazy,” a teammate told her. The recognition as flag bearer is a significant achievement in her career.
Frank Del Duca’s Commitment
Del Duca joined the talk from Cortina, reflecting on his dual role as an athlete and soldier. “It’s sort of wearing two uniforms, and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” he stated. His experience in the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program has shaped his identity as both a competitor and a family man.
Historical Significance
Jackson will become the eighth speedskater in Team USA’s history to serve as a flag bearer, while Del Duca is the sixth bobsledder to receive this honor. CEO of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, Sarah Hirshland, highlighted their embodiment of the values of excellence and unity within the team.
