The Potteries Centre Faces Setback as Retail Chain Collapses

The Potteries Centre has faced a significant setback as the fashion retailer Quiz has entered administration. This development marks another blow to the retail landscape within the center, following the earlier closure of River Island in 2026.

Quiz Enters Administration

The Quiz store located in the Hanley shopping center is already advertising a clearance sale. According to Interpath, the administrator managing Quiz’s affairs, the chain’s 40 UK stores will continue to operate temporarily while exploring future options. However, the brand’s website is no longer active.

Impact on Employees

The administration process will lead to 109 redundancies. These job losses will affect employees at Quiz’s head office in Glasgow, along with those at its warehouse and distribution center in Bellshill, Lanarkshire. Overall, Quiz employs approximately 565 individuals across the UK.

  • 109 job redundancies confirmed.
  • Head office located in Glasgow.
  • Distribution center based in Bellshill, Lanarkshire.

Retail Environment Challenges

This recent collapse is not the first for Quiz; the company struggled with similar issues last year. In February 2025, Quiz fell into administration but was quickly purchased by a subsidiary of the founding Ramzan family in a pre-pack deal. This prior deal resulted in the closure of 23 stores and affected around 200 jobs.

Alistair McAlinden, head of Interpath in Scotland, acknowledged the difficulties faced by retailers in early 2026. He highlighted that the UK high street is experiencing significant challenges. Geoff Jacobs, another joint administrator, encouraged potential buyers of Quiz’s assets and operations to come forward immediately.

Consumer Impact

In light of Quiz entering administration, the administrator has announced that gift cards and credit notes will no longer be honored. Customers with online returns must complete these in-store, without receiving cash or card refunds. Those expecting refunds for prior online returns will not receive any compensation from Quiz and are advised to contact their card provider for assistance.

The combination of disappointing sales during the crucial Christmas season and mounting economic pressures has severely affected Quiz’s viability. Changing consumer shopping habits and increased business costs have presented additional hurdles that the retailer was unable to overcome.

As the situation develops, the local community and shoppers will be keenly observing how these closures impact The Potteries Centre and what future developments may arise for the remaining retailers.
