Train Station Advises Against Transfers as Footbridge Removal Looms

The footbridge at Hampden Park station in East Sussex will undergo refurbishment starting February 7 and is expected to be out of service until mid-April. Network Rail has announced that they will begin dismantling the structure this weekend using a crane. During this period, travelers will have no means to cross the tracks directly within the station.

Impact on Passengers During Footbridge Removal

Passengers who need to access the opposite platform are directed to use a nearby level crossing. Tom Easdown, the head of stations for Southern Rail, emphasized the importance of this footbridge in their operations. He stated, “Although the refurbishment is positive for the community, passengers should plan for extra travel time due to the level crossing barriers being down when trains are approaching.”

Travel Advisory for Train Transfers

During this refurbishment, Southern Rail customers are advised against transferring trains at Hampden Park station. Easdown recommends traveling to Eastbourne station if transfers are necessary, as connections may be difficult to manage.

Details of the Refurbishment Project

The footbridge will not only be dismantled but also fully refurbished to improve its longevity. Key aspects of the project include:

  • The current paint system will be replaced with a modern, long-lasting protective covering, expected to last at least 15 years.
  • New stairs and decking made from more durable, slip-resistant materials, designed to last up to 25 years.
  • Structural strengthening to ensure the bridge’s safety for long-term use.
  • Installation of new handrails and safety mesh to prevent objects from falling onto the tracks.
  • Accessibility improvements, including tactile paving at the top of the footbridge and on the platforms for visually impaired passengers.

Timeline for Completion

This essential refurbishment work is scheduled for completion by mid-April. The bridge’s upgrades aim to enhance both safety and accessibility for all passengers using Hampden Park station.

Additional Information

On February 8, Hampden Park station will be closed entirely to facilitate the crane operation. Travelers are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
