Stellantis Sells Stake in Windsor’s NextStar Energy Battery Plant

Stellantis has decided to exit the NextStar Energy battery plant located in Windsor, Canada. This move comes as LG Energy Solution prepares to take full ownership of the facility. Stellantis will sell its 49% equity stake to LG Energy Solution.

NextStar Energy’s Journey

NextStar Energy was formed in 2022 as a joint venture between Stellantis and LG Energy Solution. Its primary aim is to establish Canada’s first large-scale electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility. With LG’s acquisition, NextStar Energy plans to utilize its technological leadership and operational expertise.

Impact on Future Operations

The change in ownership is designed to enhance NextStar Energy’s capacity to serve a larger customer base. This includes expanding into the Energy Storage System (ESS) industry. NextStar Energy will benefit from increased agility to adapt to market demands and explore future growth opportunities.

  • NextStar Energy remains a dedicated supplier for Stellantis.
  • Stellantis will continue sourcing battery products from the facility.

Transition to Energy Storage

In November 2025, NextStar Energy announced its intent to shift production towards energy storage system batteries. This strategic pivot aims to support commercial and grid-scale energy storage solutions, reflecting the company’s adaptation to changing market conditions.

Workforce and Facility Details

The Windsor facility spans 4.23 million square feet and currently employs over 1,300 workers. As production ramps up, there is a long-term goal of increasing the workforce to 2,500 employees.

NextStar Energy’s site includes two main manufacturing facilities (Cell and Module) and nine additional buildings. These support structures cover areas such as recycling and safety testing.

Union Relations

Unifor, the union representing workers at NextStar Energy, anticipates a positive relationship with LG Energy Solution following the end of the joint venture with Stellantis. The union aims to continue its collective bargaining efforts under the new ownership arrangement.
