Lloyd Center Marks Its Final Christmas Celebration
The Lloyd Center in Northeast Portland is set to mark its final Christmas celebration, according to the mall’s owners. The specific closing date remains uncertain, but the Urban Renaissance Group, which co-owns the property with KKR Real Estate Finance Trust, has committed to providing tenants with at least three months’ notice before demolition begins.
Future Plans for the Lloyd Center Site
Urban Renaissance Group has ambitious plans for the 18-block area surrounding the mall. The development will focus on enhancing the community with:
- Affordable and market-rate housing
- Retail storefronts
- Streets connected to public transportation
- 6 acres of publicly accessible open space
Notably, the new plan does not include a permanent ice rink, which has been part of the mall’s identity.
Comments from Urban Renaissance Group
Tom Kilbane, managing director, emphasized that the existing ice rink could not be retained. He described it as “physically impossible” due to its location under the atrium. However, he envisions a future with seasonal ice skating in one of the planned open spaces.
A Historic Venue Faces Change
Established in 1960, Lloyd Center has been an emblem of Portland’s innovative spirit. Kilbane remarked that the center is ready to transition into a new phase of the city’s development. KKR foreclosed on the mall in 2021, leading to a shift in tenant dynamics.
Efforts to Save Lloyd Center
Despite the impending closure, several businesses have thrived in recent years. Notable tenants include Floating World Comics and the Star Tropics Pinball Museum. Virtua gallery owner Matt Henderson has been a prominent advocate for the Save Lloyd campaign. He asserts that the mall has experienced a “magnificent creative rebirth” deserving preservation.
The Save Lloyd petition has amassed over 5,000 signatures. A “Mall Crawl” event is planned for Valentine’s Day on February 14, demonstrating community support for the landmark. Additionally, a public testimony hearing is set for February 5 to discuss the mall’s future.
Conclusion
While the Lloyd Center prepares for its final holiday season, the broader vision for the site embodies progress and change. The community’s engagement highlights the ongoing conversation about preserving a historic establishment in the face of redevelopment.
