Teen Photographer Wins Prestigious Close-Up Photo Contest with DSLR Kit

Rithved Girish, a talented young photographer from the UAE, has captured the spotlight by winning the prestigious Young category at the Close-Up Photographer of the Year (CUPOTY) 7 competition. At just 14 years old, Rithved showcased remarkable skill in macro and close-up photography, outperforming numerous contenders in this global competition.

Previous Recognition

This is not Rithved’s first accolade. He was previously honored as the Runner-Up at the highly regarded Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards, an event often dubbed the “Oscars of the Wild.”

Photography Gear

Interestingly, Rithved prefers using a professional DSLR camera, the Nikon D850, which was released nearly a decade ago. He complements this with a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art lens. This combination highlights fine details in the smallest subjects he captures.

Technical Specifications

  • Exposure: 1/160 sec
  • Aperture: f/11
  • ISO: 400
  • Accessories: Rollei Flash 58F, Radiant diffuser

Inspiration Behind the Winning Shot

Rithved’s acclaimed photograph was taken during a summer trip to Kerala, India. He encountered a colony of stingless bees, likely from the Tetragonula family. His fascination with nature drives him to explore and document these tiny wonders with his camera.

He describes the bees’ entrance as a unique structure made of wax, resin, and mud, showcasing their architectural ingenuity. Rithved emphasizes that no bait or attractants were used during the shoot, allowing the bees to exhibit their natural behaviors.

The Significance of the Image

This winning capture not only celebrates the beauty and complexity of microscopic life but also serves as a reminder of the crucial role these small creatures play in our ecosystem.
